I love that you are letting us take a look around as you slowly (and realistically) add new elements to your rooms. Thanks for encouraging those of us that can’t makeover multiple rooms at a time, but have to add pieces as money becomes available and/or we finally decide what would best suit our house.

Love the ship lap in the dining room and your dog peeking from beneath the biscotti! I’m off to find pumpkins and mums today. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Melissa, your home is just stunning! The changes are amazing. You are truly gifted! I love the light fixtures you’ve chosen. I was wondering how high your ceilings are? We bought our first home this year. It’s a cape style, built in 1950. The ceilings are lower than average (7’3″). I’m wondering if light fixtures the same size you have would fit and not look to big or make the ceiling seem lower than it already is. Thank you!

Hi Melissa! Your New House is really turning into a Beautiful Home! I am enjoying each step as you go along. It’s great that you are all ready for our Fall Season! You have created such a warm & cozy place to live in! I hope you and your family are feeling the vibe of these new changes as they come along. I was excited to see those new oars on the wall. This past Spring, I bought 2 new oars (I wish now that I have looked for antique looking ones.) and have them hanging the same way over our Family Room sofa. I have also recently purchased 2 wicker chairs, similar to yours, but are using them for dining chairs! I’m starting to feel like I’m in the mix now! lol
Even though our 2 children have recently moved out, we have been gradually making some more home improvements ourselves. It seems to never end! We have already been in our home 2O years this past May and I still enjoy making new updates & changes to our home! I will be sharing some of my updates over at “Home Love Stories”. Thank you for letting me share my home with you and all our neighbors over there. I have enjoyed commenting on other peoples post about their homes and have made some new online friends over this past year and a half! I appreciate it!! Seasonal, fresh and doable! It looks so cozy and like a place full of warmth and love. I enjoyed all of the rooms but I keep coming back to the bird art and lamps in the dining room. I love how they play off each other. What a beautiful home! Thank you for welcoming me in!

As always, you’ve outdone yourself! The new house is coming together just beautifully! I love your mix of textures & the little touches of blues throughout. It’s my favorite color & something I’m also trying to do throughout my own home. Your Fall accents are just enough to celebrate the season without going overboard.
I miss visiting Seattle every year. I used to visit every summer stay at a family friend’s home in Burien near Three Tree Point overlooking Puget Sound when we’d come out. It was one of my favorite places to be.

I love your creativity and your “love the home you live in” approach! My husband and I bought my grandparents 1954 Cape Cod and have been renovating it for four years, bringing in our own modern farmhouse English cottage vibe. I’m keeping as much original as I can, like the back Dutch door to the screened porch!, but lightening and brightening as I go. I even painted the solid pine paneling that no one thought would stick and it did- and I love it! Hope to get your books for more inspiration.

I’m currently in pregnant nesting-mode and your method of decorating is really inspiring me! How fun to see your new home, all ready for fall! I saw a few familiar items from your other homes, and also enjoyed the new ones. The white brick is perfect, and sets the stage for the interior. Loved the house tour! I’m such a fan of blue and white, but am now rethinking how to incorporate that with some soft gray as you have done. I think it will keep it from being TOO blue and white. What color paint did you use for the living room walls?

Melissa, hello. I’m on the same path, just farther behind. Some of what you mention I do intuitively, but I’ve been stuck. (Home mirrors life?) Lovely home! This may be a silly question, but what did you use to hang your oars? I have a wooden oar to hang in my bathroom and I want to find something that’s inconspicuous but sturdy.

Your blog inspires me to make my little cape cod style home even more homey and inviting. I really like your style techniques.

I live in my own 1950’s brick ranch on the east coast – so similar to your home down to the color palette and the same black iron posts on the porch. Mine was painted white when I bought it and I love it but its ready for re-painting. The white the prior owners used has far too much yellow in the base for me. I’ve scoured your site and don’t see it in the sources, so can you share what the paint color is you used on the exterior? Im drowning in white paint chips over here :-) Thanks, Melissa!

Love your painted brick. Did you guys do it yourself or hire someone else? Can you recommend a brick primer and brand of paint? We are about to paint our brick so I’m trying to figure out what to use. Thanks so much!
